Light level is not a property of a room. It is a property of a spot, and it is decided by three things:
- Which direction the window faces
- How far the plant sits from that window
- What is in the way, such as curtains, buildings, trees or an overhang
Change any one and the light level changes. The same room can hold direct sun, bright indirect and low light at the same moment, within three metres of each other.
Distance is the biggest factor
A window is not a lamp shining evenly into a room. Light drops off steeply as you move away from it, and the fall is much faster than it looks:

Those are approximate, and they assume nothing blocking the view of the sky. The practical consequence is what matters: moving a plant from the sill to a table two metres away removes roughly 80% of its light. That is not a small adjustment. It is a change of category.
Window direction
Two of the four are the same everywhere. The other two swap depending on which hemisphere you are in, so they are named here by what they face rather than by compass point:

The placement table
This is the practical answer. Find your window direction along the top, your distance down the side:

So, to answer the question directly: bright indirect is roughly 1â2 m back from an equator-facing window, 0.5â1 m from an east or west window, or right up against a pole-facing one. It is not a windowsill in full sun, and it is not the middle of the room.
Add a sheer curtain to an equator-facing or west window and the whole column shifts one step gentler, and the glass itself becomes bright indirect.
The four levels
Direct sun
The sun's rays fall on the leaves with nothing in between. Above roughly 2,500 lux, and far higher at midday in summer.
Only an unobstructed equator-facing, east or west window produces this indoors, and only for the hours the sun is on that side.
Suits: cacti, most succulents, citrus. Damage in the wrong plant: bleached patches, crisp burns in the middle of the leaf, permanent loss of variegation. Sunburn does not heal.
Bright indirect
The plant has a wide, open view of sky, but no direct rays land on it. Roughly 1,000â2,500 lux.
This is what most foliage houseplants want: Monstera, Philodendron, Alocasia, Calathea, Ficus, Spider Plant. See the placement table above for exactly where it occurs.
Medium
A partial view of sky. Typically 2â3 m from a bright window, or 1â2 m from a pole-facing one, or close to a window that looks onto a wall or fence. Roughly 250â1,000 lux.
Suits: Pothos, ZZ Plant, Dracaena, Sansevieria, Aspidistra. Expect: slower growth, and variegated varieties reverting to plain green because the plant cannot support leaf sections that do not photosynthesise.
Low
Little or no view of sky. An interior hallway, a corner more than 3m from any window, a bathroom with frosted or very small glazing. Roughly 50â250 lux.
Genuinely low-light plants are rare. Most plants labelled "low light" merely tolerate it, declining slowly over a season or two.
Critical adjustment: water considerably less here. A plant in low light uses far less water, so a routine that suited it near a window will rot the roots. Low light kills through wet soil more often than through darkness itself.
Outdoors is a different scale
Worth knowing if you move plants outside for summer: outdoor shade is far brighter than the brightest indoor spot.
Open shade under a tree or a covered porch can be 10,000-20,000 lux, several times the brightest windowsill. Full outdoor sun runs to 100,000.
So a plant that wants bright indirect goes into full shade outdoors, not dappled sun. Moving it from an indoor windowsill to an outdoor "partly shaded" spot is a large jump in intensity, and it will scorch unless acclimatised over a week or two.
What else changes a spot
- Season. The sun sits lower and days shorten, so every spot moves one step dimmer for several months. A plant that was fine at 2 m may need to come forward to 1 m.
- Obstructions. A balcony overhead, a neighbouring building, or a tree in leaf can halve what a window delivers, regardless of its direction.
- Glass and curtains. Net curtains, solar-control and heavily tinted glazing all cut transmitted light noticeably.
- Window size. A small window delivers bright indirect over a much shorter distance than a floor-to-ceiling one facing the same way.
- Dust. On both the glass and the leaves, and it matters most for plants that have no light to spare.
Checking a spot
Hold your hand about 30 cm above a sheet of white paper at the spot, around midday, and look at the shadow:

Signs the placement is wrong
Too little light
- Stretched stems with long gaps between leaves
- New leaves smaller than old ones
- Variegation fading to plain green
- Leaning hard toward the window
- No new growth through spring and summer
Too much light
- Bleached, washed-out patches
- Crisp brown burns in the middle of the leaf
- Leaves curling or folding away from the window
- Patterning fading or greying
One distinction worth holding onto: brown edges are usually humidity or water quality. Brown patches in the middle of a leaf facing the window are sunburn.
