Ceropegia woodii trails thin, wiry stems studded with small heart-shaped leaves marbled in silver and green, with purple undersides. Stems can reach 2m (6ft) or more from a small pot.
It is a semi-succulent, which is the key to keeping it.
What every String of Hearts wants
Bright, indirect light. Some direct morning sun deepens the purple and tightens the spacing between leaves. In low light the stems run long and bare.
Water only when the soil is completely dry. The leaves and the tubers along the stems store water, and overwatering is by far the most common way they are lost.
The tubers are free plants
Small round tubers form along the stems, sometimes called aerial potatoes. Press one onto damp soil while it is still attached to the parent, wait for it to root, then cut it free.
String of Hearts are non-toxic to cats and dogs.
