Philodendron is one of the largest genera in the aroid family, and one of the most forgiving. There are around 500 species, ranging from small trailing plants to climbers with leaves over a metre (3ft) across.
They divide into two rough groups. Vining Philodendrons trail or climb and grow fast. Self-heading ones form an upright clump and stay put.
What every Philodendron wants
Most of the genus is happy in bright, indirect light, in soil that drains well and dries slightly between waterings. Average household humidity is fine, which is what separates them from Calathea and makes them so much easier to keep.
Nearly all Philodendrons are toxic to cats and dogs.
