A statement plant does a different job from the rest of a collection. It is not there to fill a shelf. It is there to occupy a corner the way a chair would, and it needs the floor space and the light budget to match.
Scale needs light
This is the trade-off nobody mentions at the till. Big leaves cost a lot of energy to build and maintain, so the plants that make the most impact are generally the ones that need the most light. A Monstera in a dim corner does not become a smaller Monstera. It becomes a leggy one with small, hole-free leaves.
The ZZ plant is the honourable exception: genuine architectural presence on a low light budget, at the cost of growing very slowly.
Give them room before they need it
Statement plants outgrow their spot faster than expected, and moving a mature one is genuinely awkward: heavy pot, brittle petioles, and leaves that catch on every doorframe. Think about where it goes at full size, not at purchase size, and put it on a plant caddy with wheels if it is going anywhere near two metres.
